When the Medical Examiner's Office acts as a "rubber stamp" to law enforcement, innocent people suffer.
There is no justice for the dead when either guilty people go free due to botched homicide investigations, OR when innocent people are made to stand trial for their lives because ineptitude, mistakes, or an improper desire to please prosecutors takes away the integrity of an independent ME's Office and taints pathologist's testimony.
In the May 2010 case of Heather Trask out of Cleveland County, the ME's Office amended an autopsy report shortly after meeting with the prosecutor, in a way that bolstered the State's case. Dr. Chao Choi's amendment was to help the prosecution convict this young woman whose child was fatally injured by her father while Ms. Trask was at work (he had already been tried and convicted for the infant's death). By expanding the time the injuries could have been inflicted, the prosecution attempted to get around Trask's alibi and impute knowledge to her (she was charged with permitting child abuse that led to death). Thankfully, the jury ACQUITTED Ms. Trask, seeing through ME pathologist Choi's waffling in what, in the opinion of JFTD, is frighteningly reminiscent of the Joyce Gilchrist scandal. Please sign this PETITION in support of the Chanda Turner Reform Bill to create INDEPENDENCE and AUTONOMY in our ME's Office and prevent other innocent Oklahoman's from having to stand trial for their lives due to "rubber stamp" testimony out of an ME's Office that lacks integrity, competence or consistency.
