SHEILA DEVINEY lived the quiet, unassuming life of a college student with her two lovely children, next door to her parents in Maysville. Just minutes after dropping the children off at school, on a cold January morning in 2004, Sheila was set upon, incapacitated and burned alive in her trailer home. In spite of the fact that Sheila had detectable amounts of accelerants on her body and clothing, and further that three fires had started simultaneously inside the trailer, her death was ruled an accidental house fire by the State Fire Marshals office.
Undeterred, Sheila’s parents, David and Susan Deviney continued to seek answers amid a year’s worth of administrative finger pointing between the State Fire Marshal, the Medical Examiner's Office and the OSBI. Finally the necessary changes in Sheila’s death certificate facilitated a real investigation into her death, but the delay allowed the case to grow cold. Armed with a homicide classification, the Devineys sought a Grand Jury which upheld the homicide notion but could not identify a suspect. Sheila Deviney’s death is now a cold case that no agency is actively working, due in large part to the length of time it took the ME's Office to correctly rule her death a homicide.
There is a $50,000 REWARD for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible forSheila's murder.

Now, six years after Sheila’s death, the Office of the State Medical Examiner is threatening to incinerate portions of Sheila’s remains kept following her autopsy for potential future forensic tests, citing storage space concerns. These remains amount to small samples of tissue and blood roughly the size of a deck of playing cards or smaller.
The Devineys have joined other families from all over the state in demanding our tax dollars be spent wisely in reforming the Medical Examiner’s Office into the kind of separate, capable and forthright agency that Sheila Deviney, and all Oklahomans, deserve.
